On September 5, 2008 SESMEKE received a call for a chemical spill response
at the Ambarlư Port, Istanbul. After the call SESMEKE
immediately mobilized the response team to the incident site.
After
the deployment of the team and site inspection, response operation has
started in order to conduct a clean – up for 34 IBC containers of
Silicone Tetra Chlorine in two 20” containers which is corrosive, toxic,
reactive to water and produces thick hydrogen chlorine fumes under wet
conditions. After the completion of the operation which took nearly
24 hours to complete and all material has transferred into clean IBC
containers,
site clean – up has been conducted covering the collection of hazardous
wastes, used response suits, equipments and other domestic wastes.
Nearly whole operation has been conducted according to Level A threat
conditions due to risky and tough working conditions and hazard posed
by
the chemical material.
No
injuries were reported to response personnel or port personnel.
